(The Journey: 너의 우주로 가는 길)은 작가가 자신의 할머니를 찾아 떠난 여정에 대한 기록이다. 열기구와 책, 홍차 등 여행에 필요한 물건이 올려진 선반, 할머니의별을 향해 올라탄 기차 안, 여행 중 마주한 신비로운 순간들과, 현실과할머니의 우주 어딘가에서 소풍하는 장면들은 모두 이번 전시에서 볼 수 있는 광경이다. 도토리는 할머니의 별을 찾을 수 있는 단서로 모든 작품에는 현실에서 볼 수 없는 신비로운빛의 도토리가등장한다. 작가와 동행하는 동물들은 도토리를 주우며 할머니의 별로 향하는 여정을 이어간다. 달콤한 마들렌과 시계 모양의 티백을 우린 홍차는 할머니와의 추억이 가득한 과거를 회상케 하며, 오감을 타고 작가와 관객을 할머니가계신 또 다른 우주로 초대한다. 작품에 자주 등장하는 이불과 베개. 커튼 등의 패브릭 소품은 할머니의 포근함과 온기를 전해주는듯 하다. 작가는 회화뿐만 아니라 천을 이용한 바느질 작업을 통해 작품 세계를 확장해왔다. 패브릭으로 만든 그림 속 주인공들은 갤러리에서 직접 만날 수 있으며 잠시나마 우리가 존재하는 이곳을 떠나 낯선 우주로관객을 인도한다. 여러분도 전시장 곳곳 숨겨진 도토리를 따라 이 신비롭고 따뜻한 여정에 동행하길 바란다.
The Journey
(The Journey to Your Universe)is Juyi Sung's sixth solo exhibition. It consists of a collection of moments the artist has recorded throughout her journey of searching for her grandmother, Nana. A recurring motif in the paintings is a magical cupboard built to store and protect memories of Nana. The cozy-looking case is filled with Nana's belongings and the objects needed for the trip. Floating balloons, books leading to another universe, and time-traveling teas are neatly arranged in wooden cabinets. Some fantastical moments from the adventure, such as teatime with imaginary friends and a train to the planet where Nana lives, are depicted in soft colors with oil paint on canvas. The journey is also full of symbols that emphasize the fantastical elements of the story. Magic acorns serve as an important clue along the way, appearing in every painting in this collection. The acorns glow, even in the dark, and lead the artist and her companions to Nana's planet. Sweet madeleines appear at teatime and unlock the memories they had with Nana. The aroma of the tea beckons the travelers to the universe where Nana lives. The artist further interweaves imagination with reality by using pieces of her grandmother's belongings, such as blankets, pillows, and curtains, to create fabric objects for her fictional world. The handmade characters sit beside the paintings, and the little acorns are hidden in the gallery space, complementing the story of the exhibition. The textile objects further encourage audiences to interact with the artist's world and invite them to join this magical journey.
